Kyrgyz parliamentarians discuss opening TikTok representative office

In this way, Kyrgyz parliamentarians are going to stop illegal drug advertisements being spread online.

Speaking at the parliamentary session, a parliamentarian Marlen Mamataliev proposed opening an official representative office of the TikTok social media app in Kyrgyzstan. This proposal was put forward during the debates on the draft law on combating drug trafficking among children and young people, Kabar reports.

Mamataliev emphasised that blocking TikTok has not achieved its goal: young people continue to use this social media app via VPN. To solve the problem, he proposed establishing cooperation with the owners of the hosting service.

He said TikTok Director for Central Asia is a native of Kyrgyzstan, who had proposed opening a representative office of the company and cooperating with law enforcement agencies.

Mamataliev suggested that the Ministry of Digitalization hold talks on opening representative offices of TikTok, Telegram and Meta in the Republic to strengthen control over the content and respond to signals from law enforcement agencies. His initiative was supported by a parliamentarian Dastan Bekeshev, who noted that TikTok could be used to advertise Kyrgyzstan’s tourism potential.
