Japan provides $147.3 million loan to improve Uzbekistan’s health system

The loan will be used to purchase medical equipment for healthcare facilities in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara.

A 22.9-billion-yen ($147.3 million) loan agreement for the implementation of a healthcare project was signed in Tashkent. The document was inked by Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan Laziz Kudratov and Ambassador of Japan Hatori Takashi. The loan will be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the press office of the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan reported.

The project envisages building the Republican Specialised Neurology and Stroke Centre in Tashkent and equip tertiary healthcare institutions in Samarkand and Bukhara.

This decision was made to address the shortage of stroke hospitals and replace outdated medical equipment in regional hospitals.

The project is expected to expand access to high-quality health care, enhance training capacity of the employee training centre and improve public health.
