The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank will allocate $270 million to Tajikistan to build the Rogun HPP. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Finance of Tajikistan and the AIIB Vice President in Beijing on December 20, the press office of the Ministry of Finance reported.
The Bank plans to allocate $500 million in 2 tranches.
The funds will be used to implement the first stage of the hydropower plant project, including the construction of infrastructure facilities and roads.
Currently, 2 of the 6 units with a capacity of 600 MW each, launched in 2018 and 2019, are operating at the power plant. The project worth $6.29 billion is scheduled to be completed in 2029. The hydropower plant will generate up to 17 billion kWh of electricity annually, ensuring energy independence for Tajikistan.
