Uzbekistan increases lending to small and medium-sized businesses

As reported, the share has fallen from 40% to 28% over the past 5 years, and it needs to return to its previous values.

Measures to support small and medium-sized businesses through bank lending were discussed at a meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. It was noted that the share of loans to this sector has fallen to 28% over the past 5 years, and this indicator is to return to 40%, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

Banks are tasked to serve as catalysts for successful entrepreneurship development, particularly for 7.5 million clients with an average credit score.

In 2025, it is planned to implement a pilot project for 100,000 such clients that envisages providing individual support and improving financial literacy.

This reform is part of the large-scale programme to support 60 leading regions and cities in the country, where it is planned to increase access to employment opportunities for 2 million people and lift 417,000 families out of poverty.
