Russia to help Uzbekistan to improve gas transportation system

The Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic noted that this will ensure reliable gas transit to the country.

Uzbekistan is actively modernising the gas transportation system and considering cooperation with Kazakhstan and Russia in this area. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan Jamshid Kuchkarov made this statement at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, Interfax reports.

Kuchkarov emphasised that the modernisation of the gas transportation system is a key to ensuring reliable and stable gas transit to the country. He noted that gas consumption in Uzbekistan is increasing influenced by economic and population growth.

The country is optimising the tariff policy in the energy sector seeking to achieve resource efficiency. Therefore, Uzbekistan is set to cooperate with Kazakhstan and Russia, in particular with Gazprom Corporation.

Previously, the capacities of Uzbekistan’s oil and gas sector allowed producing about 70 billion cubic metres of natural gas and 8 million tonnes of liquid hydrocarbons annually. However, over the past 15 years, hydrocarbon production has significantly decreased due to depletion of fields and technological losses. According to official data, in 2023, gas production decreased by 9,6% compared to the previous year.
