The Government of Tajikistan is completing talks on a $650 million loan with the World Bank (WB). These funds will be used to complete the construction of the Rogun hydropower plant (HPP). This was announced by President of the Republic Emomali Rahmon during a meeting with the representatives of the construction company, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.
Talks with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on a $500 million loan are in the final stage. Rahmon added that Tajikistan has signed the agreements with the Islamic Development Bank for a $150 million concessional loan and the Saudi Fund for Development for a $100 million concessional loan.
The President emphasised that work is underway to attract additional grants from the Asian Development Bank and soft loans from the Qatar Fund for Development and the European Investment Bank. He noted that over 42.5 billion somoni have been allocated from the State Budget and other sources of financing to complete the construction of the Rogun HPP. Since the commissioning of the first two units in 2018, the plant has generated 7.5 billion kilowatt-hours.
Emomali Rahmon noted that the Rogun HPP plays a vital role for Tajikistan, as it will ensure energy independence and sustainable economic growth and improve the standard of living in the country.
