On September 11, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced his intention to create conditions under which at least one member of each low-income family, particularly women, would receive higher education, Press Secretary of the President Sherzod Asadov reported.
The President stated that students of universities, colleges and technical schools with good academic performance, that is, at least 80% of good grades, will receive interest-free student loans for the next academic year. This measure aims to improve education levels of young people and support their academic efforts.
An additional grant will be given to children from needy families who have 80% of the score required to receive a grant to enter educational institutions. President Mirziyoyev noted that each financially independent university must annually allocate no less than 1 billion soums in grants. These grants will cover from 20% to 80% of the cost of tuition for children from low-income families, depending on their academic achievements.
First Deputy Director of the National Agency for Social Protection Shakhnoza Mirziyoyeva was tasked to coordinate work to ensure that children from poor families have access to quality education in kindergartens, schools, technical schools and universities and provide them with comprehensive support.
The President emphasised that the fight against poverty will become a nationwide movement. He noted that the causes of poverty are diverse, and approaches to reducing it should be diverse. In this context, the From Poverty to Well-Being Programme was announced.
