Uzbekistan breaks historical record at Paris Olympics

The Republic ranks 13th in the overall medal count among 206 countries; the Uzbek athletes won 13 medals.

The Olympic Games in Paris have come to an end. Uzbekistan won 13 medals, 8 of which are gold. The Republic ranks 13th in the overall medal count among 206 countries, the press office of the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan reported.

The Uzbek athletes snatched top spot for the Republic in the medal table among the Central Asian countries and the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Organisation of Turkic States. Uzbekistan finished 4th in Asia after China, Japan and South Korea.

Furthermore, it is the first time in history of the country that an athlete from Uzbekistan won a gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games. The boxing team ranked first in the overall medal standings with 5 gold medals. The Uzbek judokas won 3 medals at the Olympic Games for the first time in history, and the taekwondo practitioners won 2 medals.

Uzbekistan competed for the first time in such sports as football, diving, archery and women’s wrestling.

In August 2021, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev set the goal for the country to enter the top 15 teams at the Olympic Games.
