Uzbekistan intends to export a surplus of green electricity generated in the country to Europe through Azerbaijan from 2030. Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov made this statement at the first meeting of energy ministries of the Central Asian countries in Astana, the Fergana News Agency reports.
Uzbekistan will begin exporting electricity after a submarine communications cable is laid along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are participating in the project as well. The Memorandum of Cooperation on the energy system integration was signed at the Investment Forum in Tashkent in the spring.
Electricity will be supplied from Uzbekistan through Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. It will be supplied from Azerbaijan to Georgia and then to Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary along the bottom of the Black Sea. According to Mirzamakhmudov, it is planned to export 2-5 GW of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES) to Europe. He said the total electricity generation from RES will grow to 4 GW in the Republic by the end of the year. By 2030, this figure will exceed 20 GW, of which 2-5 GW will be exported to Europe, the Minister emphasised. Exports will depend on the capacity of Uzbekistan’s electricity supply system and the consumer demand in Europe.
