Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan wraps up public hearings on nuclear power plant construction in August

Several departments and experts hold meetings with citizens throughout the country.

The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan will wrap up public discussions of the plans for nuclear power plant construction next month, in August, TASS reports.

«Together with other government bodies, the Institute of Nuclear Physics, the National Nuclear Centre, experts and local executive bodies, the Ministry of Energy will complete visits to the regions and meetings with local populations in August,» Minister of Energy of the Republic Almasadam Satkaliev said.

The Minister clarified that the timetable for a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant will be set out after public discussions end. The Election Commission will announce the date.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev proposed holding a national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant last autumn. Last June, Tokayev said the referendum will be held in the autumn of 2024. Based on the assessment results, the Ministry of Energy chose the construction site of a nuclear power plant in Ulken village in Almaty Region.
