Parliamentarians in Uzbekistan differ in opinion on death penalty

Parliamentarians Alisher Kadyrov and Odiljon Tozhiev differed in opinion on the restoration of the death penalty after the news of the brutal murder of a child.

The two Deputy Speakers of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan made opposing statements with regard to the possible restoration of the death penalty in the country. The use of this punishment aroused heated debate on social media after a terrible incident in Tashkent, in which a stepfather killed a three-year-old child, Gazeta.uz Newspaper reported.

Deputy Speaker for Information Coordination and Interaction with the Media Odiljon Tozhiev is fundamentally opposed to the restoration of the death penalty in the Republic. He said this measure would be unfair and unacceptable, as it could lead to the execution of an innocent person, especially if the integrity of the investigation or judicial proceedings was compromised.

According to Tozhiev, the restoration of the death penalty will not reduce crime in the country.

The leader of the Milliy Tiklanish faction of the Democratic Party of Uzbekistan Alisher Kadyrov has the opposite point of view. He believes that a person who commits a crime against a small child deserves the harshest punishment. Kadyrov emphasised the need to protect citizens of Uzbekistan against it.
