President of Kazakhstan urges to remember victims of repression and mass famine

The President of Kazakhstan addressed citizens of the country on social media on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression and Famine.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev addressed citizens of the country on social media on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression and Famine, which is celebrated annually.

«Today, on May 31, we are paying tribute to and commemorating the victims of political repression and famine of the last century,» the President of the Republic wrote.

He highlighted the importance of restoring historical justice and studying unbiasedly the dark pages of history in his post. The President emphasised that only by learning the lessons of the past and having saved this memory, the country will respond to challenges and move towards building a fair and harmonious society.

The Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression and Famine has been officially celebrated in Kazakhstan since 1997 in accordance with the Decree of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Earlier, President Tokayev said rigorous research in the famine of the 1920s-the early 1930s had not been conducted.
