Every year, on the first Sunday of April, Turkmenistan celebrates a holiday called «A Drop of Water is a Grain of Gold». The purpose of this holiday is to remind people of the value of water because Turkmenistan is one of the hottest countries in the world. Desert occupies most of the area of the state.
On the occasion of the holiday, a regional observer Vadim Shagiahmedov told CentralAsia.news about the development of the water use system in Turkmenistan.
Culture of water use
From time immemorial, ancestors of the Turkmen people formed the culture of agriculture using artificial irrigation systems. The remains of dams, karezes, water intakes, dams, and small main canals are found by researchers on the territory of Ahal, Lebap, and Mary provinces. The most respected people in the village were entrusted with the distribution of water. Mirabs established the regime of water use and monitored the cleanliness of ditches and dams.
Modern development of irrigation
Water is considered the main source of life throughout the history of the Turkmen people. The current generation continues the tradition of caring for the water. The state develops irrigation and builds reservoirs. A unique complex of mudflow diversion facilities was commissioned in 2022 (the project was implemented by the Russian and Turkmen project institutes — Sevkavgiprovodhoz and Türkmensuwylymtaslama («Water Supply of Turkmenistan»), as well as specialists of the Scientific Research Institute of Seismic Construction of Turkmenistan. Construction work was carried out by the Vozrozhdenie company. The underground mudflow first passes through pipes, then along the reconstructed natural mudflow channels connected to the Karakum River, and then goes to the «Altyn Asyr» lake.
During the construction of the complex, 36 million cubic meters of natural sand and gravel were extracted, and 9 water collectors were built along the mudflow channels. The complex has tanks that crush impurities, and filter water. Thanks to this, favorable conditions for the development of animal husbandry in the Karakum Desert will be formed, and pasture areas will expand.
A Drop of Water is a Grain of Gold» is also a professional holiday for specialists who are involved in the construction of canals, land reclamation, irrigation, and other water management specialists. Thanks to them, citizens of Turkmenistan don’t face the water shortage.
We congratulate the professionals on the corresponding holiday and wish them good health, happiness, and success in their hard work.
