Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Uzbekistan

Tremors caused by an earthquake were felt in Tashkent and other regions; the epicentre was on the territory of Afghanistan.

In the late evening of March 21, a magnitude 4.0-5.0 earthquake occurred in the capital city of Uzbekistan and nearby regions; its epicentre was in Afghanistan, Gazeta.uz reported.

According to witnesses, the shaking was felt for quite a long time. Many residents of houses and visitors to shops ran out into the street. The first motion was vertical, the second motion, which occurred a minute later, was horizontal.

According to seismologists, the epicentre of the earthquake was in Afghanistan, 561 km southeast of Tashkent. The seismic focus of the magnitude 6.5 earthquake lay at a depth of about 220 kilometres below the earth’s surface.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit Tashkent.  The shaking of such intensity has not been recorded in the capital of Uzbekistan for quite a long time.

An earthquake of about the same magnitude was felt in Surkhandarya, Fergana, Syrdarya, Jizzakh, Andijan, Samarkand, Bukhara, Navoi, Namangan, Kashkadarya Regions of the Republic.

Many of citizens of the country received a hazard warning message on their Android smartphones a minute before the shaking started.
