World Bank to assist Uzbekistan in implementing reforms

The issues under discussion included the expansion of cooperation and the Bank’s contribution to promoting reforms in the country.

On March 9, Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Anna Bjerde to discuss the promotion of strategic cooperation and the Bank’s contribution to stepping up reform efforts of the Republic, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

Bjerde said the Bank is ready to continue promoting the implementation of reforms in Uzbekistan. She noted that the Bank will assist in eradicating poverty, developing a business sector development and finance strategy, improving rural infrastructure and medium-sized cities, boosting women’s employment and youth vocational training and implementing the health strategy for the period until 2030.

The interlocutors identified such priority areas of collaboration as decarbonization of the economy, growth of renewable energy, development of power generation and transmission master plans and programmes aimed at improving energy efficiency and enhancing the resilience of electricity systems, attraction of experts and financing of hydropower projects.

They emphasised that the capacities of the World Bank Country Platform will be used to promote reforms and priority projects.

In conclusion, the interlocutors agreed to adopt a joint roadmap to step up the development and implementation of priority projects.
