Development of science and higher education discussed in Astana

The measures taken to support national science and higher education were discussed at a meeting of the President with Minister Sayasat Nurbek.

On March 2, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a meeting with Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek to discuss the progress of the creation of an academic campus in Konaev city and a number of other issues, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported.

The Minister presented the draft Concept for the Development of Higher Education and Science for 2023-2029 and reported on the opening of representative offices of 3 foreign universities in Kazakhstan in 2022 and the plans to open 5 more new branches in 2023.

The Minister of Science and Higher Education informed the President that the salaries of scientific workers were doubled and the research institutes engaged in fundamental research were switched to direct funding. The plans for the next 3 years envisage the undertaking of steps aimed at increasing funding for science 3.5 times. The Ministry also plans to gradually raise student scholarships and increase the number of places in student dormitories by 10,000 in the next 7 years.

The Minister reported on the plans to introduce a new administrative system of science and set up the centres of academic excellence at higher educational institutions.
