An avalanche after heavy snowfall hit Khorog city in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan. President Emomali Rahmon took personal control of the measures being taken to reduce the impact of the natural disaster, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported to CentralAsia.news.
In accordance with the Order of the President of Tajikistan, the State Commission responsible for rebuilding damaged facilities was set up. Rahmon tasked the government officials to rebuild all damaged facilities as soon as possible. The coordinating body will provide material assistance to avalanche-affected families. They will be provided with food, warm clothes and household items.
The Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence of Tajikistan reported that the avalanche death toll in Khorog has risen to 13. 12 citizens were injured. 4 residential buildings were totally wiped out, and 35 residential buildings and 5 business facilities were destroyed partially.
According to weather forecasts, the risk of avalanches remains high in the Republic until February 19.
