President of Kazakhstan dissolves Mazhilis and schedules elections for March 19

Tokayev held consultations with the heads of the houses of the Parliament and the Prime Minister on the dissolution of the lower house and the early termination of the powers of maslikhats.

On January 19, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held consultations with the heads of the houses of the Parliament, Maulen Ashimbayev and Yerlan Koshanov and Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov on the dissolution of the Mazhilis and the early termination of the powers of maslikhats, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The President emphasised that the people had supported the implementation of political reforms, including the new procedure of starting a Parliament and maslikhats during the referendum.

«I informed about the schedule of upcoming election campaigns in the September Address. According to the schedule, extraordinary presidential elections took place in November last year. The deputies of the Senate were recently elected. Now we have to hold elections to the Mazhilis and maslikhats,» the President said.

The Kazakh leader made a final decision on the dissolution of the lower house and the early termination of the powers of maslikhats. He expressed belief that newly elected parliamentarians would continue to work in the same format and give a new impetus to the integrated development of the country. The President noted that extraordinary elections to the Mazhilis will take place on March 19.
