Uzbekistan to boost uranium and coal production and processing

The need to attract investors to develop deposits and implement new projects in this industry was emphasised.

On January 11, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the projects aimed at boosting coal and uranium production. The President was informed that coal production, along with other energy resources, is increasing to meet the demand for energy that is rising due to population and economic growth, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The President was informed that over the past 5 years, coal production has increased from 4 million tonnes to 5.3 million tonnes per year. According to estimates, Uzbekistan has total coal reserves of about 2 billion tonnes. In this regard, Mirziyoyev instructed to effectively use this potential and gradually increase production.

This year, the project for modernisation of Shargunkumir JSC is to be completed, which will allow producing up to 900,000 tonnes of high-quality coal in the country.

Commenting on the report, the Uzbek leader focused on the possibility of increasing coal production through the development of the Shargun and Baysun deposits, emphasising the need to attract investors to develop the deposits and implement new projects.

Uranium mining is an important sector of Uzbekistan’s mining industry. In this regard, the President was informed about the joint projects with the French company Orano Mining. The Uzbek leader instructed to speed up the joint projects aimed at improving the efficiency of uranium mining and processing and exploring uranium deposits within bilateral cooperation.
