Rahmon and Guterres discuss Tajikistan’s initiatives for addressing global challenges

The progress towards achieving the SDGs, addressing modern threats and challenges and promoting the highest human values was discussed.

On November 8, Tajik leader Emomali Rahmon met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his state visit to Sharm el-Sheikh. The interlocutors exchanged views on major aspects of cooperation between the Republic and the United Nations and its agencies, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The interlocutors focused on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing modern threats and challenges, promoting the highest human values and resolutely confronting the dangers and threats of our time. They also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and its impact on the region.

They discussed the global initiatives of Tajikistan aimed at tackling water scarcity, climate change, melting glaciers and other significant efforts taken by the Republic.

They noted that in the past few decades, a thousand glaciers have melted in the country, and as a result natural hazards have accounted for $250 million of economic losses to Tajikistan. Disaster events led to human losses in many cases.
