Measures to develop transport sector discussed in Tashkent

President Mirziyoyev and sectoral specialists assessed the prospects of increasing domestic and international transportation.

On September 28, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on the development of Uzbekistan’s transport sector, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

The participants reported on the performance indicators of the transport sector over the past 2-3 years. The number of air carriers flying to Uzbekistan increased, as did the share of domestic road carriers in the market. 300 km of railways were electrified, and about 1,500 km of highways were built.

President Mirziyoyev said the potential of the industry remained untapped. Railway freight turnover is growing at an insufficient pace, and the airports throughout the country are not loaded to full capacity.

The President identified three areas in which measures need to be taken to improve the performance of Uzbekistan’s transport sector. These are the expansion of transit traffic by rail, the improvement of work performance of civil aviation services and the expansion of the road network to increase international freight transportation.

The President also highlighted the advisability of setting up a transport group at the Strategic Reforms Agency that will prepare development plans of Uzbekistan’s transport sector.
