Leaders of SCO Member States meet in Samarkand

The leaders and prime ministers of the SCO Member States held meetings in a narrow format on the first day of the SCO Summit in Samarkand.

On September 16, the meeting of the leaders of the SCO Member States in a narrow format chaired by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev took place in Samarkand, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov, Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Zhang Ming and Director of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Ruslan Mirzaev attended the meeting.

The meeting focused on key aspects of multilateral cooperation within the SCO and issues of regional and international politics.

Addressing those present, the Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted that Uzbekistan has done tremendous work in the framework of its Chairmanship in the SCO. 80 international events were held despite the pandemic. 40 agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in industrial cooperation, green economy, trade, digital technologies and other areas were drafted for the meeting.

The SCO plays a significant role in international and regional processes, serving as a stabilizing factor for security and economic development.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev put forward a number of initiatives to promote cooperation in key areas for the coming years. These include the optimisation of the activities of the SCO to changing conditions, enhancement of partnerships in the trade, economic, investment, transport, cultural and education sectors and coordination of joint efforts to resolve the situation in Afghanistan.

After the meeting of the leaders of the SCO Member States had concluded, the meetings involving the leaders of the SCO Observer States, the representatives of international organisations and guests of honour took place.
