Thorough inspection of emergency preparedness system initiated in Kazakhstan

Alikhan Smailov highlighted the urgent need to upgrade civil protection agencies and modernise warning systems.

On September 8, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov put the urgent tasks of fighting wildfires in the regions at the forefront at the government meeting. The Prime Minister gave specific instructions to address the serious shortcomings identified, the press office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the authorities need to inspect thoroughly the emergency preparedness of the national emergency services.

The Prime Minister noted that wildfires in Kostanay Region exposed an actual demand for additional financial and technical support for civil protection agencies and nature conservation institutions, as well as modernisation of warning systems. Alikhan Smailov said the relevant departments should reformat the algorithms of approaches and interaction in responding to major emergencies.

In this regard, the Prime Minister specified that the current emergency situation had spotlighted the inability to provide the timely response and professional negligence of the officials. These factors have to be investigated and conclusions have to be drawn, and the perpetrators must be punished.
