Aspects of Uzbekistan-EU cooperation discussed in Tashkent

The talks between Jamshid Khodjaev and the EU delegation focused on building up partnerships between Uzbekistan and the EU countries.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan Jamshid Khodjaev met with Head of the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan Charlotte Adrian, the press office of the Ministry reported.

The issues under discussion included the prospects for intensifying trade, economic, financial and technical cooperation, as well as Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

The development indicators of trade and economic partnerships between Uzbekistan and the EU states were presented. In the first seven months of the year, bilateral trade increased by 15 percent and reached $2.4 billion. This became possible thanks to the expansion of Uzbekistan’s beneficiary status to GSP+, among other factors. The interlocutors expressed their readiness for interaction to maintain this status.

The interlocutors noted that the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Uzbekistan and the EU will contribute to strengthening economic partnerships between Uzbekistan and the EU countries and attract European investment in such fields as technical regulation, sanitary and phytosanitary control, customs regulation and protection of intellectual property.

The Head of the EU Delegation noted that the European Union is ready to provide technical and advisory support to Uzbekistan on the process of accession to the WTO.

The interlocutors discussed the EU-Uzbekistan Indicative Partnership Programme for 2021-2024 and upcoming bilateral events. They agreed to continue cooperation in key areas.
