Turkmenistan launches new environmental project

It aims to protect citizens and nature from the consequences of the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes.

As part of the instruction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the Scientific-Information Center of Interstate Sustainable Development Commission of International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea has launched a new environmental project in the country, as reported by «Golden Age».

The project was launched as part of the state’s obligations under the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal. Its main goal is to protect the health of the local population and nature from the negative consequences of moving hazardous waste across the border.

Muhammed Durikov, the head of the Scientific-Information Center, said that to date only the first phase of the program is realized. Specialists are preparing an analytical review of the Turkmen legislation that is related to waste management. Based on the relevant document, proposals on amending the code of laws of the country will be developed.

During the implementation of the project, employees of the Ministry of Agriculture, the State Committee for Water Resources, the Ministry of Health, border services, the State Migration Service and a number of other departments will take part in three seminars. Booklets on the Basel Convention are already translated into Turkmen.
