Uzbek leader visits Nukus in Karakalpakstan

During the visit, the President reviewed the current situation in the region and heard the reports of the high-ranking officials on the actions taken to ensure public order.

On July 3, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Nukus, the capital of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, where mass rallies took place the day before, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

During his trip in Nukus, President Mirziyoyev held a meeting via videoconference on the actions taken to restore public order and maintain the constitutional order. The meeting was attended by the high-ranking officials of all the regions of the Republic. The commandant of the Republic of Karakalpakstan reported that the situation was completely under control, and the state of emergency and curfew were declared in the region.

The heads of the relevant government agencies reported on the actions taken to ensure security of residents and maintain law and order. They noted that the situation in the region stabilized after the President had stated that the articles of the Constitution on the special legal status of Karakalpakstan would remain unchanged.

During his trip to Karakalpakstan, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with deputies of Jokargy Kenes, the heads of the Council of Ministers and residents of the region.

The rallies in Nukus that unfolded on July 1 reflected dissatisfaction with possible changes in the Constitution regarding the special legal status of the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
