Japarov launches construction of one of Central Asia’s largest hydroelectric power plants

The President urged to reduce sources of electrical power that have negative environmental impacts.

On June 8, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov took part in the ground-breaking ceremony of the Kambar-Ata hydroelectric power plant in Jalal-Abad Region. In the presence of the cabinet ministers, the Kyrgyz leader pressed the button setting off a dynamite charge of the rock, which the dam of the future hydroelectric power plant will be built from, the press office of the President of Kyrgyzstan reports.

Japarov congratulated those present on the start of construction and expressed belief that Kambar-Ata-1 would solve the problem of electric power shortage in the country.

This hydroelectric power plant will be one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in Central Asia.

The project envisages building a 256 m high rockfill dam, a hydroelectric power plant with installed capacity of 1,860 MW and annual generation capacity of 5.6 billion kWh on average and a water reservoir with a total capacity of 5.4 billion m3.

Japarov also highlighted the need to reduce sources of electrical power that have negative environmental impacts and focus on increasing hydropower generation.
