Samarkand to host world tourism forum in 2023

The ancient city will host the 25th General Assembly of the UN World Tourism Organization.

Minister of Tourism and Sports of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov informed that the next UNWTO General Assembly would be held in Samarkand in 2023 during his visit to the capital of Spain, Madrid to participate in the 24th General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the press office of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan reported.

This will be the first time that Samarkand will host a tourist event of this level. It is planned that the influx of guests and tourists will bring significant income to the local population, in particular small and medium-sized businesses, including artisans and craftsmen. Moreover, this will attract global media attention to Uzbekistan, which will undoubtedly serve to develop the tourism potential of the country and Samarkand Region in particular.

The Uzbekistan delegation visited Spain from November 30 to December 2. The aim of the visit was to promote cooperation in the tourism sector, strengthen interaction with international organisations and raise the authority of Uzbekistan in the world community.

Consistent measures are being taken to attract foreign tourists and transform Samarkand into one of the most visited regional and world tourist attractions. Such tourism infrastructure facilities as a new airport and the Samarkand Tourist Centre, which will include hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment centres, an amphitheatre and the New Renaissance congress hall, are under construction.
