Tokayev visits Kazakh ethnic exhibition at Swiss Museum

A Swiss diplomat brought one of the unique velvet friezes from the Kazakh steppes in the 19th century.

On November 30, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev visited the Bern Historical Museum during his official visit to Switzerland. A handmade Kazakh velvet wall frieze was presented to the distinguished guest. President of Switzerland Guy Parmelin accompanied the leader of the Republic of Kazakhstan during the cultural event, the press office of Akorda reported.

The unique frieze belongs to the collection of the renowned diplomat and traveller Henri Moser. Kazakh Sultan Baymukhammed donated the canvas to the Swiss diplomat in the 19th century. The visitors noted that the rarest exhibit served as a symbol of cultural relations between Kazakhstan and Switzerland.

The exhibition also features wall carpets, weapons – axes, arched sabres, daggers, horse trappings and household items of the Kazakh steppe people. The museum curators emphasised that the items that had survived to this day vividly illustrated the openness, friendliness and diplomacy of the rulers from the Kazakh steppes.

Stressing that the velvet frieze was a valuable source for scientific research on the history and way of life of the Kazakh Khanate, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev expressed the hope that the unique work of art would be exhibited in Kazakhstan.
