ADFD allocates $100 million for projects in Turkmenistan

Abu Dhabi Fund for Development will finance the construction of an airport and hybrid power plant in the Central Asian country.

A delegation of Turkmenistan headed by Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Berdimuhamedov arrived in the United Arab Emirates on June 9. During the visit, Rahimberdi Jepbarov, the Chairman of the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan met with Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, the director general of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), as reported by the press office of the Turkmen MFA.

The parties signed two agreements worth AED 367 million (about 100 million dollars). The first document includes the allocation of AED 275 million (75 million dollars) for the construction of an airport in Jebel, Balkan province. Within the second agreement, ADFD will provide AED 92 million (approximately 25 million dollars) for the construction of a 10 MW hybrid power plant.

— I am confident that both projects will go a long way in ensuring an improved livelihood for the local population and achieving the sustainable development goals, — said Mohammed Al Suwaidi.

He noted that cooperation established between the fund and the government of Turkmenistan in 1999 is developing at a high pace.

— The agreements will allow Turkmenistan to accelerate economic growth by supporting key sectors of the national economy, in particular infrastructure, energy and transport, — said Jepbarov.

The airport project is focused on improving air traffic in the Central Asian region. As part of the signed agreement, a passenger terminal of the airfield complex with capacity of 100 people per hour will be built. The above-mentioned power plant will supply power to the residents of Altyn Asyr.

It must be added that in February this year, the government of Turkmenistan and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development signed memorandums of understanding worth 393 million dollars. These are documents on the creation of an investment company, the construction of a gas chemical industrial complex for the production of polyvinyl acetate in the Central Asian country, an airport in Jebel and the implementation of several energy projects. In addition, ADFD has allocated money to establish a kidney disease treatment center in Ashgabat.
